The Los Angeles National OCUSA 2003 Convention will hold as scheduled on July 18 and 19, 2003.
However, we will take a final decision on this matter in California. The decision will be fourth of July weekend or non-holiday weekend for future conventions, please be there and to let your voice be heard.
Having said that, it should be noted that we (the host chapter) deliberated so diligently on this issue, so as not to alienate anyone. We initially explored on the possibility of fourth of July weekend, however the following obstacles forced us to move to a later date:
1. Inability to secure a hotel within the Los Angeles proper for the convention during the fourth of July weekend. July - August being peak months of summer vacation coupled with the holidays, made it very difficult to secure a place for fourth of July convention.
2. In Los Angeles and with the Nigerian community, party halls are the hottest selling commodities. Halls are often booked 2 years ahead of time and fourth of July weekend are fully booked coupled with the fact that there are other Nigerian associations having parties that weekend.
Upon reading Dr. Ufondu's concern, I considered other alternatives including moving out of Los Angeles proper. However, that option was not possible because we live so far from each other and Los Angeles is a central point for us.
Moreover, we will need our friends, well wishers and the Nigerian community who happens to be within Los Angeles to grace our night party.
All things having been considered, we will be at a strenuous and financial disadvantage to make such a major change in date at this point in our planing.
We will not only forfeit over $4,000.00 (deposits) with Sheraton Gateway Hotel and the night party hall; we could not find a hotel or party hall for that weekend within the Los Angeles proper.
It is therefore our humble request as the host chapter to you, the executive council and all parties concern, impacted or unpacked by the July 18 - 19 dates, to please make sacrifices for the good of Oraifite and leave the dates as is, with a clear understanding that the issue be top on our 2003 convention agenda for deliberation.
