- Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
I wish to welcome you all to this arena. The occasion is Ibolo Community Day 2003 being sponsored by the Lagos Branch of Ibolo Community League.
You are all welcome in the name of our lord Jesus.
Today is not for speech making, and so, I will just say one or two things and sit down so that the contents of our 2003 package will roll out.
May I once again say welcome to all of you who have come all the way from Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Jos, Aba, Owerri, Umuahia, Enugu,
Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha and so on. To spend one happy day in a person's birth place oncein a year is not too much. As our people say, ones name is
known but mainly in his place of birth. Thank you all for coming home and for finding time to grace this occasion.
As you must have know, the year 2003 was started with a budget by Ibolo Community League. But that budget met with financial constraints which
denied it full implementation. We made provisons for road works, bore-hole projects, creation of market for labourers and repair of old Obi under
capital. For recurrent expenditures, we provided for vigilante services, Ibolo Community office and social aids to the needy in our midst. This
budget was circulated to branches but no response came from any of the branches.
We were not discouraged but have continued to move forward with the meagre resources we could muster from within us. This we supplemented with manual labour and thatis why some of our roads are wearing their present looks. We could have done more if we had some support. We are determined to move forward even if slowly. What we cannot afford any more is being stagnant. We want to sentitize our people to be marching forward all the time because that is our idea of progress. To spend 1 million in a year and leave ten following years without progress is not our method.
In pursuit of this forward movement, we wish to appeal for assistance in one or two projects which we believe will improve the quality of life of our people.
- We want 6 bore holes for the Community. This is no longer the time to carry water-pots to streams. Our plan is to network
the bore holes and have water in most home steads all the time. This will help our people in more ways than one. It will make them healthier,
happier and wiser and neater.
- We also need a health centre building so that the heath centre will be permanently located there.
- We also need another building along the road to enable us sent set up a small artisan market for masons, carpenters, labourers, plumbers, pinters etc.. to service our projects at home and also provide employment to the residents of Ibolo Community. You can see that due to urban pressure from Onitsha and Nnewi, the population of this community is growing very fast and efforts should be made to utilise the development to good advantage. By this arrangement, it will no longer be neccessary to look for such skills in private homes. When we need a carpenter, mason, a plumber, an electrician, a labourer we save time by going to the market to select the best.
I wish to use this opportunity to thank our people for their inestimable support so far in, peace - making in our community, in improved
attendance to meetings, in manual work on our roads and in security matters. Anambra State Governemnet on 22nd November 2003 launched a
modern security outfit in the States. We have plans to benefit from the activities of that fit. I hereby inform our community members that
donations to that out fit are still open to members of the public.
At this junction, may I most sincerely thank our Lagos branch for all the activities of this season. May God replenish their purses. It is my expectation that other dear branches of ours will take up the sponsorship of other end of year activities even if on a scale that is lower
than this.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen help us to provide water for our people and a health centre for them so that they will live long for
us while I wish each ad every one of you, long life, happy Christmas and a very prosperous new year in the name of Jesus.
Thank you.
Dr. Mike A. Obi JP
