Economic Life Of Oraifite People incl Farming, Fishing & Raffia Wine Tapping
The Economy of Oraifite is based largely on Farming (Yams, Cassavas, Cocoyams, etc...),
Fishing and Raffia wine tapping.
Sadly, some young people are given Oraifite town a very bad naming such Kidnapper or home of feared Kidnappers.
This is a false accusation of a peace loving hard working people.
Oraifte is blessed with food and water. Oraifite people have master the art of fishing and raffia wine tapping.
Furthermore, the main slave trade route to the Creeks via the Niger River was through the big Ose (Nnukwu Ose mgbo)
which was developed by Anumanu-Ezeigbo, a grandson of Anumanu and probably the first recorded Obi in the lineage of Udoji in Ibolo-Oraifite.
He was able to trade with the Portuguese who built a modern story building at
his Obi in 1836.
People rowed their big canoes from Aboh,Ndoni and Atani to Ose Ibolo and do their trading. Two third of Oraifite
is raffia swamp.
The reputation of Oraifite in raffia wine tapping (ite-ngwo) emerges from this environmental fact. There are enough swamps
and water for fishing and farming.
In Oraifte, in the evenings, there is a special raffia wine (Nmachu), that is sold every where.
During the overflooding period, iju, Oraifite is reputed for production of fish. Also they produce yams and cocoyam.
At the upper villiage, Irefi, Ezimueri and Ifite, they tap palm wine (Nkwu enu), as well as
cultivate yams and cocoyams.
It will be noted that Oraifite harvests its new yams and cocoyams as from June - those cultivated in the swamp and by October,
the upland yams are ready for harvest.
The abundance of food in Oraifite has made most of their children unconcerned about looking for greener pastures else where earlier
than now.
The feeling of self-sufficiency has made it impossible for children of Oraifite to serve as apprentices, on trade. Hence the
development of Oraifite has been very slow.
