Diseases and Symptoms - Killer Disease Most Dangerous in Igboland Africa
The Most Dangerous Killer Diseases
How they breakdown your immune systems and send you to early grave and the steps to
reduce the risks.
What is a disease? A disease is a pathological process having a characteristic set of signs and symptoms.
It may affect the whole body or any of its part and its aetiology. Pathology and Prognosis may be
known or unknown.
Let us however explain the medical terms above to the understanding of all. Aetiology is the science of the
cause of disease.
Patholoav is the branch of medicine that deals with the essential nature of disease,
especially of the structural and functional changes in tissues and organs of the body which cause or
are caused by disease.
Proanosis Is the forecast of the probable caused and outcome of an attack of disease and the prospects
of recovery as indicated by the nature of the disease and the symptoms of the case.
The prognosis provides a rationale for setting priorities for meeting a particular/ patient’s care needs
and enhances continuity of care by clearly indicating agreed priorities.
Every disease is dangerous to the body, but there. more dangerous ones such as:
Heart attack, Alhzeimer; Stroke, Arthritis, Cancer; HIV AIDS, TB, Malaria, Fibroid, Stress,
Kidney failure, Crphn's, High blood pressure, Asthma, Sickle Cell, Typhoid fever; Meningitis, Hepatitis,
Bronchitis and many more.
We shall however deal with only 15 for now, giving you brief histories about them.
ASTHMA Killer Disease
Asthma is a condition that affects the passages of the lungs. It has two step problems, namely:
1. the air passage are inflamed and airways becomes red and open |
2. the inflammation makes them over sensitive and can trigger asthma symptoms, making it difficult
for the person to breathe. |
Asthma is chronic. It may look as if it goes away for a while but the inflammation of air passage remains.
Asthma is mostly common in children and adolescents, the allergies appears before the age of 35 and can
occur when a person comes in contact with something he or she has developed an allergy.
There are however non-allergic asthma, common in middle aged adults. Asthma attack may occur in response to
triggers such as exercise, cold air or respiratory infections.
Some of the following symptoms may occur: coughing, wheezing, tightening of the chest, shortness of breath,
and mucus production.
Asthma cannot be cured, but with proper treatment it can be effectively controlled.
Good asthma control allows most adults live full, active, trouble free lives. But, can cause reduced
physical activities, missed work if not effectively controlled.
STROKE Killer Disease
A stroke is a "brain attack" that happens when a part of the brain experiences
a problem with blood flow.
This disruption in blood flow cuts off the supply of oxygen to the cells in that part of the brain, and
these cells begin to die.
Damage to the brain can cause loss of speech, vision, or movement in an arm or the leg, depending
on the part of the brain that is affected. In many cases, a stroke will affect only one side of the body.
A stroke that damages the right side of the brain will affect the left side of the body and vice versa.
About 85% of strokes occur when enough blood does not get into the brain, especially when artery
carrying blood blocks.
Blockage can be caused either by a blood clot that forms in an artery in the brain or by a blood clot
formed elsewhere in the body that travels through the bloodstream to the brain.
If this clot becomes stuck in an artery in the brain, a stroke can result. Clots are more likely to
form in arteries that are damaged by atherosolerosis, also called "hardening of the arteries"
due to the buildup of cholesterol and other thick, rough, fatty deposits in the arteries.
A "mini-stroke" is exactly like a stroke, but it lasts only a short time and leaves no
disability. The term for this event is transient ischenic attack (ITA)
WARNING SIGNS OF STROKE: Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm and leg on one side of the body,
loss of vision, particularly in one eye. Loss of speech, or trouble talking or understanding speech.
Sudden severe headaches with no apparent cause unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or
sudden falls, especially if accompanied by any of the previous symptoms.
HOW TO PREVENT STROKE:
Lower your cholesterol level by:-
- modifying diet,
- stop smoking,
- moderate intake of alcohol,
- keep your weight within normal limits,
- get a moderate amount of exercise,
- eat a healthy diet that is high in fruits
- and vegetable and low in fats.
STRESS Killer Disease
Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside
world.
Common stress reactions include tension, irritability, inability to concentrate, and a variety
of physical symptoms that include headache and a fast heartbeat.
It's almost impossible to live without some stress. And most of us wouldn't want to, because it gives life
some spice and excitement.
But if stress gets out of control, it may harm your health, your relationships,
and your enjoyment of life.
Examples of "overload" situations are common in today's world:
- You and your spouse both work full time while you are raising your family. At the same time,
your parents are retired, in ill health, and are dependent on your help with shopping and running errands.
- You are a single person living alone, and your salary isn't rising as fast as the rate of inflation. It's getting
harder each month to pay the bills.
- You are a divorced parent and share the custody of your children with your former spouse. But the
friction between the two of you on matters concerning the children is becoming more bitter and more frequent.
- The expectations and competition at your workplace is becoming fierce. You find yourself coming in early,
staying late, and taking on more work than you can handle.
Managing stress involves learning about:
- How stress affects the mind and body.
- How to identify the warning signs of stress.
- How to develop good stress management techniques.
- When to seek professional help.
What Are The Signs Of Stress?
Stress can cause both mental and physical symptoms. The effects of stress are different for different people.
The mental symptoms of stress include:
- Tension
- Irritability
- Inability to concentrate
- Feeling excessively tired
- Trouble sleeping
The physical symptoms of stress include:
- Dry mouth
- A pounding heart
- Difficulty breathing
- Stomach upset
- Frequent urination
- Sweating palms
- Tight muscles that may cause pain and trembling
